Get to and Stay in Grenada for Carnival
Grenada is easily accessible by air with direct flights from major cities like Miami, New York, Toronto, and London. Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) is your gateway to the island.
If you’re traveling from the U.S., airlines like American, JetBlue, and Delta offer regular routes, especially around peak Grenada Carnival season. Book early, because flights fill quickly. For the best deals, consider using travel rewards or points—you’d be amazed how far they can go.
Once you land, you’re never far from the action. Taxis and car rentals are easy to find, and the island is small enough that getting around doesn’t take hours. Grenadians are warm and welcoming, so don’t be surprised if you make new friends before even leaving the airport.

Culture and Energy of Spice Mas

Spice Mas isn’t just another Caribbean Carnival—it’s a living, breathing cultural phenomenon. Grenada Carnival is rooted in African traditions and colonial resistance, and you can feel that legacy in every beat of the drum and every step on the road.
From the eerie, liberating energy of Jab Jab covered in oil and paint to the pageantry of Pretty Mas, Spice Mas offers a duality few other carnivals can match. It’s raw. It’s spiritual. And it’s proudly Grenadian.
Traditional mas characters like the Vieux Corps and Shortknee take center stage alongside feathered and glittered masqueraders. For culture lovers, this is a masterclass in Caribbean history and pride wrapped in high-energy celebration.
Play Mas in Grenada
No carnival experience is complete without playing mas (masquerade), and Spice Mas boasts some of the most creative and vibrant costumes in the Caribbean.

Don’t Miss Jab Jab: The Heartbeat of Grenada Carnival
Nothing—and I mean nothing—prepares you for the emotional, ancestral power of Jab Jab. It’s a J’ouvert morning tradition where masqueraders cover themselves in black oil, mud, or paint, symbolizing rebellion and freedom.
It’s primal. It’s loud. It’s powerful.Jab Jab is what gives Spice Mas its soul. The chants, the chains, the horns—it’s more than just performance. It’s ancestral memory being honored in the streets. If you’ve never felt that kind of spiritual charge, J’ouvert in Grenada will change you.
Many people come to Spice Mas JUST to experience the Jab.
Jab Jab bands are a quintessential part of Grenada’s J’ouvert celebrations, embodying the island’s rich cultural heritage. While specific band names may vary annually, several notable Jab Jab bands have been prominent in past Spice Mas events:
• Jab Nation J’ouvert Band: Known for their immersive Jab Jab experience during Spicemas.
• Carib Gold Jab J’ouvert Band: Associated with Carib Beer Grenada, this band has been active in J’ouvert festivities.
It’s important to note that many Jab Jab bands are community-based and may not have a significant online presence. These bands often organize at the village level, with groups forming organically within local communities. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on participating Jab Jab bands for Spice Mas 2025, it is advisable to contact the Spicemas Corporation directly or connect with local community centers upon arrival in Grenada.
Spotlight on Soca Monarch: Grenada’s Musical Battleground
If you want to experience the heart of Grenadian soca, the Soca Monarch competition is where it all explodes. Held in the days leading up to Carnival Monday, this high-octane event brings together the island’s top soca artists in a battle for musical supremacy.
Divided into two categories—Groovy Soca and Power Soca—the competition showcases everything from wine-worthy rhythms to adrenaline-pumping road anthems. Expect jaw-dropping stage performances, flag-waving fans, and songs that will dominate the road on Carnival Tuesday.
Artists like Dash, V’ghn, and Luni Spark & Electrify have lit up the stage in years past, delivering performances that blur the line between concert and spiritual revival. Soca Monarch is not just a show—it’s a movement.
Pro tip: Arrive early to grab a good spot, to take in not only the intensity of the artists, but that of its fans. This competition is serious, and the fans take it even more seriously. Either way, let the music and the energy of the people carry you.
Monday Night Mas: Glitter, Lights, and Revelry
After the intensity of Jab Jab, the night takes a colorful turn with Monday Night Mas. Think glowing crowds, LED wands, and pumping soca music under the stars.
The mas bands dominate the night with illuminated costumes and coordinated themes. It’s pure, joyful chaos in the best way possible. This is the time to get glam, get glowing, and get loose.
If you’re trying to catch the full Grenada Carnival 2025 vibe, don’t skip this. Monday Night Mas is where freedom meets fantasy.
Carnival Tuesday: Pretty Mas and the Grand Parade
The final day of Spice Mas is all about Pretty Mas—your chance to bring your costume dreams to life. Parade through the streets of St. George’s in vibrant colors, feathers, and gems as thousands cheer you on.
Bands bring their A-game with jaw-dropping designs that showcase Grenadian creativity and craftsmanship. Whether you’re frontline or backline, you’ll be part of something unforgettable.
The energy on Carnival Tuesday is euphoric. It’s the crescendo of a week’s worth of revelry, culture, and connection. Cameras flash, DJs spin, and the road becomes your runway.
